32nd World Othello Championship
in Oslo, Norway

We are pleased to announce that the 32nd Annual World Othello Championship will be held in Oslo, Norway, November 19 - 22, 2008. The venue for the WOC will be The Quality Hotel 33 in Oslo.

The Tournament will be sponsored by Anjar Co., MegaHouse Corporation and Mattel, and our hosts will be the Norwegian Othello Federation.
The Tournament Directors will be Tor Birger Skogen and Vidar Aas, (see Tor Birger's and Vidar's biography below).

The Quality Hotel 33 is centrally located only 4 km from Oslo Central Station and is perfectly suited for the WOC. We will enjoy the Conference facilities for the actual tournament play. Visit the hotel's official website for more details. For those interested in staying at this hotel, we have reserved a block of rooms at discounted prices. Please refer to the World Othello Tournament when making room reservations.

In addition to the cash prizes, trophies will be awarded to the First through Fourth Place Winners and Team Trophies will go to each member of the winning country. The Champion will have his or her name permanently inscribed on the rotating Othello Trophy, alongside the previous 31 World Othello Champions.

The Welcome Reception will be held at the Quality Hotel 33 on Wednesday, November 19th from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. In keeping with tradition, first round pairings will be drawn at the Reception.

Lunch will be served at the Tournament Site for all players and official guests on Thursday, November 20th and Friday, November 21st and on Saturday, December 22nd for the finalists and working staff.

Anjar recommends Expedia.com for the least expensive and most convenient way to book your stay in Oslo. Use the form below to make air, hotel and car reservations at the best prices currently available. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Tor Birger Skogen.

Tournament Directors

ToTor Birger Skogen and Vidar Aas will direct the 32nd World Othello Championship in Oslo.

Tor Birger has played Othello since 1988, and represented Norway in the 1990 WOC in Stockholm and the 2005 WOC in Reykjavik. He was co-founder of the Norwegian Othello Federation and has been president since 2002.
In addition to playing Othello, he has been an active Go player for many years. He has won the Norwegian Go Championship several times, and participated in the World Amateur Go Championship in 1986.
Tor Birger lives in Oslo together with his wife and daughter. When he doesn't play Othello he listens to music, read books and collect stamps and postcards. He also likes to travel and see new countries together with his family.

Vidar has played Othello since 1985, and has participated in the WOC five times. He was founder of the Norwegian Othello Federation in 1988 and became Norwegian Othello Champion in 1989 and 1990.
He is also a player and organizer of several other games and tournaments. In addition to the five WOC's, he has also participated in three other boardgame WC's: Rummikub, Carcassonne and Stratego, and was Norwegian Carcassonne Champion in 2006.
Vidar lives in Arendal on the southern coast of Norway with wife, three children and four cats. When he's not playing or organizing games he is most often found at home, on his bicycle or at flea markets, looking for old games, puzzles and books.
