Conexión Othello Latinoamérica
6 June 2025Written by Daniel Olivares

On Saturday, June 14th, the first hybrid Othello championship will be held.
We propose the hybrid format for some confederation competitions, which would allow to increase participation.
In 2021, the European qualifier for the Chess World Cup was played in a hybrid format. 264 players from 35 European countries competed in the tournament, with one venue in each country. At each venue, at least one FIDE-appointed arbiter supervised the games. The competition involved all 36 available spots on the European continent for the Chess World Cup.
This time, players at different venues in Latin America will play the same 5-round Swiss system tournament.
As this is a friendly test tournament, some players will be allowed to participate exclusively online, with the decision of whether or not to accept participation being left to the local Federation.
We hope that this format will be accepted for official ranking competitions.
When pairings are made, two situations can occur.
The opposing players are in the same location, in which case they play the game on a board as usual.
The opposing players are in different venues, in which case they play the game online under the supervision of the venue's referee.
