Bern EGP 2025: The true spirit of the European Grand Prix

In my long Othello experience I attended many EGPs, and in my opinion this was the best one.

24 players from 10 different countries with an average WOF rating of 1900.

I think Bern set a new standard for EGP tournaments. Matthias’s organization was perfect, he took care of every single detail. It was not only a matter of finding a location, organize the tournament, trophies, and so on.  Bern EGP was much more, Matthias showed us what Bern and Switzerland has to offer: the incredible alpine hike, the typical and delicious food, and the amazing local tradition to swim in the Aare river. Even the rainy day was not a problem, because Matthias organized fun activities at a climbing gym.

So, it was not only “an EGP”, but a long weekend packed with a lot of fun activities, and of course an Othello tournament (a very challenging one).

Last but not least, congratulations to Matthias for winning the tournament, defeating an amazing Felix Juigner who finished the preliminary rounds undefeated. Third place went to former world champion Kunihiko Tanida who came all the way from Japan for this tournament.

Congratulations also to Michele Borassi for winning the 2025 EGP season.

I really hope to have another Bern EGP very very soon.

Stay tuned for next year’s EGP season and an Othello Summer Camp!!!
